Big Five Safari Guide: Where & When to See Them

The Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros - represent Africa's most iconic wildlife. Tanzania offers excellent opportunities to see all five species in their natural habitat.

Lions are most easily spotted in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Look for them resting under acacia trees during hot days or hunt at dawn and dusk. The Crater has a particularly high lion density.

Leopards are elusive but can be found in Serengeti's kopjes and riverine forests. They're most active at night but sometimes spotted resting in trees during the day, especially along the Seronera River.

Elephants are abundant in Tarangire National Park, which has the largest elephant population in Tanzania. They gather around the Tarangire River during dry season, creating spectacular viewing opportunities.

Buffalo move in large herds across the Serengeti ecosystem. They're often found near water sources and are easiest to spot during the dry season when they concentrate around rivers and watering holes.

Black rhinoceros are the rarest of the Big Five in Tanzania. Your best chance is in Ngorongoro Crater, which has a small but stable population. They're most active in early morning and late afternoon.
